Nerja is located at the easterly end of the province of Andalusia, just
50kms from Malaga. This town, with a population of 15,000 inhabitants
has managed to maintain much of its old Moorish character, while still
offering all the modern amenities that you could ask for if you have a
property there. Nerja also boasts 13kms of beach, which includes the famous
Burriana beach. The nerve centre of Nerja has to be the historic Balcon
de Europa which was constructed in 1487. This promenade, flanked on the
left by lovely arches, and on the right by hotels, bars and restaurants,
ends at a semi-circular viewpoint on the cliff-top, commanding magnificent
views over the Mediterranean and the surrounding mountains. The two ancient
cannons also remind people that until 1812 there was a fortress at the
top of the cliffs.
There are a wide range of cultural events throughout the
year. Of particular note is the acclaimed Nerja Caves Festivalî,
which takes place amongst the stalactites and stalagmites, which were
formed over millions of years. The Nerja Caves are currently the 3rd most
visited monument in the whole of Spain.
