Fiestas and Ferias in Andalusia
Local Fiestas and Ferias (Festivals and Fairs) are events that should be experienced if you want a real taste of Spanish culture. These events tend to be very colourful with locals dressed in Flamenco outfits while with some even on horseback. This is the moment when every town and village strives to put on a splendid show, not only for themselves but also for those who come from afar to admire and enjoy. So you can expect dancing, eating and drinking and enjoying a family day.
There are several thousand fiestas and ferias celebrated every year in Andalucia, including fairs, pilgrimages, carnivals, mock battles between Moors and Christians and religious processions. Fiestas tend to be for a day while a Feria is a 5-6 day long event You can also expect to find fairground rides and outside bars and restaurants selling local traditional foods.
In fact, there is scarcely a day in the year without its fiesta, with special emphasis on the periods before and after the autumn harvests. Each town has its own patron saint and yearly procession.
